Best of 2009: Honorable Mention

We've reached the end of our Best Albums of 2009 countdown. Still, it's also worth noting the top 10 albums that unfortunately did not make it to our list. All of these efforts were of a high quality, yet just barely missed, so to end off our year here at Animal Noises, please feel free to peruse the list below. We hope everyone has a happy new year, and we'll see you in 2010.

Most Prolific Artists of the Decade: #21-30

Our latest list-- the Most Prolific Artists of the Decade-- looks to chronicle the most important (for better or for worse) artists of the decade. For one reason or another, be it their positive (or negative) cultural significance, landmark moments for music, staying power or otherwise, these artists mattered a great deal this decade.

In no way is this a list of our favorites of the decade. On the contrary, many of our favorites are not present, while others whom we're actually not fans of, have made the list. So without further ado, check out our the third part of our Most Prolific Artists list below. Next to each artist's name, you'll see a basic numeric list of all primary recordings this decade. For many of these, their impact should probably be self-explanatory. Enjoy, and if you haven't yet read our list of the Best Songs of 2009, or Best Albums of the Decade, read up on those too.

30. OutKast -- 3 LPs (Most recent: 2006's Idlewild)

We've nearly reached the end of our countdown of the best albums of the decade. As difficult as compiling this list was to compile, I think it was worth it. Hopefully you do too. Check out #11-20 below-- all album streams are courtesy of Lala.com

Weekly Top 10: Title Tracks

This week's idea for the playlist comes courtesy of Matt, so he should receive all credit for any popularity the idea may end up having. Many times, artists name an album after an overwhelming idea presented forth, a lyric that had substantial meaning, or in other cases, a certain track on the album. Though it shouldn't inflate standards that the song shares a name with the album, it can at times-- if a track is important enough to have the same name as the record, then some feel it should be the one most indicative, or just best, in general. For the tracks below, we felt that each of the ones we chose fell into one, or both of those two categories. Maybe you agree. In any case, check it out below.

Tuesday's Releases (10/13): Now Streaming

Really low haul this week, so I won't take up this space with too much talk. Next week's going to be loaded, however, so stay tuned for that. There should be at least 10 albums up in this space then, if not more. Today's offering, mostly due to a small number of notable releases, will have to suffice though, even without the highly-recommended Neon Indian. Check out the other two below, and credit for the original idea, as always, goes out to LargeHeartedBoy.

The Flaming Lips' Embryonic Now Streaming!

So, many may be aware that The Flaming Lips showed up on The Colbert Report last night. As exciting as that was, the news we're more concerned with is the limited-time album stream. That's right. From now until this coming Monday, The Flaming Lips will be streaming their forthcoming album, Embryonic, in full. I know, you're all just as shocked, and pleased as I am. So go check it out over at Colbert Nation. Embryonic will be hitting stores September 13th via Warner Bros.

New Flaming Lips, "See the Leaves"

Hooray for previews ahead of the release! We've still got about two months until The Flaming Lips' latest effort, Embryonic, comes out, yet we are now hearing our third song from the collection. "See the Leaves." This one, unlike our first two previews, can leave listeners staggering. Noisy, disjointed and hectic, the track is different, to say the least. It literally mauls you with solos and percussion beats, the likes of which have rarely been seen from the band, so my suggestion is tread lightly. Still, an awesome track that has me more excited by the day for Embryonic. Speaking of, it's out October 13th via Warner Bros. Go check out "See the Leaves" at Pitchfork.

Weekly Top 10: Best Songs of 1999

As per usual on Thursdays, we make a playlist based on a specific theme, and then put it up here for you to listen to, courtesy of Imeem. This week, we decided to do a bit of a throwback post. As scary as it may seem to those of us in ours twenties, 1999 was a decade ago, so that music is, indeed, old. Below are our picks for the best (or at least, our favorites) from that year. Best if enjoyed while wearing Boss jeans and a non-fitted backwards Mighty Ducks hat.

New Flaming Lips, "Convinced of the Hex" and "Silver Trembling Hands"

I feel like we've known about the new Flaming Lips album for months (we have). I've sort of been counting down, but it's tough to do so when it's still so far away (September 29th). Luckily, the band has decided to give us something to make the time go quicker, or at least satiate our appetites for new music for the time being. New tracks "Convinced of the Hex" and "Silver Trembling Hands" are the offering we've been handed, a sampling of both upcoming full length, Embryonic, as well as special release EP, Songs From the Future Album Embryonic. You can get the EP by buying tickets for certain Flaming Lips shows this summer, if you're interested. I like both songs. "Silver Trembling Hands" reminds me a bit of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, while "Convinced of the Hex" has a completely opposite vibe, chugging along in a confined, and engaging, space. Go check them out, courtesy of Covert Curiosity.

John's Track of the Week: "Do You Realize??"

Song: Do You Realize??
Artist: The Flaming Lips
Album: Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots
Year: 2002

This week, my track of the week sort of switches back to the type of stuff you'd normally see from me.  "Do You Realize??", probably The Flaming Lips' most popular and well-known song, is one of the many relaxing and spacious tracks off of 2002's Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.  Readers will probably recognize it from VH1 spots, as well as Mitsubishi and HP commercials, but before that, it was simply a song about struggling with addiction and the hardship left behind from a close loved one's death.

While in the studio recording Yoshimi, lead singer Wayne Coyne was still dealing with the death of his father, and bandmate Steven Drozd was struggling with kicking a drug addiction.  The emotions of these events combined allowed Coyne to pen "Do You Realize??", which indirectly deals with the two situations, while speaking of death and getting the most out of life.  The band actually enjoys the fact that people find this song rather endearing, and, entertainingly enough, it was named the state of Oklahoma's official rock song last month.  Though I wasn't aware that states had official rock songs, you can still enjoy Oklahoma's below.
